Today, I would like you to meet Rochelle. She has come into cloth diapering by her daughter being allergic to chemicals in disposables! We have linked to some of her favorites!!


 

I am fairly new to cloth diapering. Basically got thrown into it. My daughter had a bad rash that would not go away. After many doctors visits and very expensive prescription diaper cream. We found out that it was a contact skin irritation. So my poor daughter was allergic to something in the disposable diapers. I felt horrible. Knowing that I was supposed to protect her and I didn't even think to cloth diaper. I made the decision right then. Not knowing anything about the subject I started googling it. Wow ! It can be extremely over whelming. 

Thankfully I had a friend that has been at this for the last 9 months. She invited me over to actually look at  the different styles and check them out hands on. Being that I like to make an informed decision, I was referred to Jillian's Drawers. What a wonderful store. It is run by moms in New York. They offer a cloth diaper trial. You get to try every style of cloth diaper, prefolds, pockets, all in ones. The nice part is you keep them and use them for 21 days. You can send all or some of them back and get a refund on them. I highly recommend the trial. I found that I actually like the fitted diapers that use a cover and the all in ones a lot. 

My daughter is now 11 months old, 23 lbs, and still a little chunky around the middle and in the thighs. I thought I was going to love the "gro baby" diaper. It is one of the more expensive costing around $25 for the setup. Which includes the shell and 2 inserts. This is considered a hybrid diaper because you can just change the insert at each changing and the outer shell twice a day. 

Nice concept but not made for a chunky baby. It's narrow on her bum and the elastic leaves red marks on her legs. I absolutely LOVE the Fuzzi Bunz one size pocket diaper. The liner is a buttery soft micro fleece. AMAZING ! They wash up nicely and get even softer the more they are washed. Compaired to the other cloth diapers it dries the fastest. If you have a heavy wetter you can stuff it with as many inserts as you want. For night time I use 2 inserts and we haven't had any leaks. Plus it is a one size so it can be used for awhile and it is reasonable priced at around $ 18 so in my opinion the best pocket diaper. There will always be some Fuzzi Bunz in my stash.  

Bumgenius diapers are another top brand.  They are priced about the same as Fuzzi Bunz. I have tried the one size pocket and the All in one. Both work great and haven't had any problems with them. I have found that the All in one takes the longest out of all my diapers to dry. Even in the dryer I have to take the others out when they are dry and put it on another cycle.

Trying to save money I got online and ordered some handmade diapers. I had a poor experience and a great one. You just have to really read into what you are buying and don't be afraid to ask questions. The poor experience I ordered on eBay. It was my first and I didn't read what it was made with I was just in love with the cute fabric on it. Turns out that the inner part( that goes up against the babies skin) was fleece. After a couple washings it looks terrible. My other find was as awesome find. It is a very talented Work at home mom in IL . She is very pleasant to work with, the diapers are great, and she will custom make whatever you want. I ordered a super cute diaper cover with ruffles, an aio diaper and a custom short sleeve shirt. I use the Thirsties Fab fitted diapers under her diaper cover.

Even though I still have alot to learn and it can sometimes become overwhelming. I know that I am doing the best thing possible for my daughter. Cloth diapers seem very expensive to get into and they can be. The thing to keep in mind is that it can be reused over and over again.  When you compare the costs of cloth vs. disposable you won't believe the outcome.
